Film Screening Edinburgh - Acteal 'A Massacre Foretold'

A MASSACRE FORETOLD

This documentary by Scottish film-maker Nick Higgins reveals the truth behind the 1997 massacre in the village of Acteal in the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico.   45 indigenous women, children and men were murdered by paramilitaries with the aid of state forces.  Those killed were from a pacifist organisation called Las Abejas, who sympathise with the aims of the Zapatistas.
 
The perpetrator of this crime was a paramilitary group that had been trained and armed by the government.  Public Security police officers were present on the road only 200 metres away from the scene of the crime; they remained in the local school all the time the massacre was taking place, while the gunshots of the massacre could be plainly heard.
 
This atrocity is very relevant today as 29 perpetrators of the massacre have recently been released from prison in Mexico, and more may be released soon.  It is feared that they will return to the Acteal area, posing a threat to local people.
 
Further, the recent build-up in attacks on Zapatista and other oppositional indigenous communities has raised the spectre of another such massacre.
 
The film will be followed by a short discussion.  Zapatista coffee, calendars, and merchandise will be available for purchase.
